Background to the study

Covering around 1,000 km2 In Rivers State, Easter Nigeria, Ogoniland has been the site of oil industry operations since the late 1950s. It has a tragic history of environmental pollution from oil spills, hydrocarbon flaring and oil well fires. Unfortunately, no systematic scientific information has been available about the ensuing contamination.

An independent study was conducted in 2011 at the request of the Federal Government of Nigeria and Shell Petroleum Development Company, Nigeria under the platform of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)....
